Message from the CEO

I hope all of you are as happy to see spring come as I am. Six months of winter is too much. After a period of time without a newsletter to our customers due to some staffing changes, we are happy to provide you with this spring newsletter. We plan to send out each spring and fall. We hope you like it and plan to keep you updated on bank products and a variety of other items.

We are very proud of our Internet Banking product and thank all of you that are using the product. If you are not using it, please stop and visit with one of our Personal Bankers who will demonstrate the product for you. Internet Banking works very well in combination with our Home Equity Credit Line. If you have both products you can go on-line and advance funds you need to purchase vehicles, take vacations etc. without even calling the bank.

For those of you that don’t use the Internet, please try our Telephone Banking. You can check balances, determine if a check or deposit has cleared and transfer funds 24/7 just by calling a toll free phone number. Please see one of our Personal Bankers to get signed up.

Spring and summer is a great time for one of our home improvement loans. Need a new roof or siding, a new addition or that kitchen you have wanted to remodel? With rates at all time lows, now would be a great time to talk to our loan experts.

We are very proud of all the banking relationships we have developed with our small business and farm customers. We have new loan promotions for equipment and real estate loans at this time. Please contact one of our business or agricultural lenders to discuss.

We appreciate our customers and I feel we don’t say "Thank You" nearly enough. It is because of you that we have been able to grow as a local community bank.

From all of us at Minnesota National Bank, Thank You!

Paul Skorheim

Sign up For Direct Deposit

Sign up For Direct Deposit

Direct deposit automatically places your paycheck, pension, Social Security, or other regular monthly income into your checking, savings, or money market account. (Starting May 1, everyone who applies for Social Security or other federal government benefits will be required to arrange for direct deposit of their payments. The government plans to phase out paper checks entirely by 2013.) It can make your life easier and reduce paperwork. With just a few forms, you can eliminate a lot of hassle. Here are the advantages of using direct deposit:

  • Quick. There's no more waiting for checks to clear. Have access to your funds sooner.
  • Convenient. Saves time and gas. No more driving to the bank or standing in line.
  • Secure. Eliminates the risk of your check being lost or stolen in the mail.
  • Reliable. You always know when your check will be deposited - even if you are out of town.
  • Free. There is no cost.

Saving for Retirement

Are you on the way to a financially secure retirement? Counting on Social Security or the equity in your home to fund your retirement may not provide you with enough money to live comfortably.

If you have a retirement plan at work, participating in it is one of the best ways to save for tomorrow, even if retirement is years and years away. Here are four reasons why a company retirement plan is so beneficial:

Potential Tax Benefits Before You Retire
Contributions to your retirement account are “pre-tax” dollars that reduce taxable earnings on income, which may result in a lower tax bill every April.

Earnings Are Tax-Deferred

You won’t pay any taxes on your workplace retirement savings until you make withdrawals. Be aware that if you take money out of your account before you turn 59-1/2, you’ll not only pay taxes on the withdrawal, but a 10% penalty as well.

Potential Tax Benefits After You Retire
You may be able to save on taxes when you withdraw money during retirement because you’ll most likely be in a lower income tax bracket.

“Matching Funds” Can Increase Your Retirement Nest Egg
Many organizations add money to your account by matching a percentage of your contributions, providing a rare opportunity to get something for nothing. For example, let’s say you save 6% of your income in your company’s savings plan, and your total contributions for the year come to $3,000. With a plan that matches 50% of your contributions up to 6% of your income, you’ll end up with an extra $1,500. Consider it “free” money that will help boost your retirement savings every single year.

If you leave your job or are close to retirement, Minnesota National Bank can help you protect your wealth. When you change jobs or retire, you’ll have some decisions to make about your retirement savings account. We can help you make informed decisions to protect your savings and guarantee that you’ll have income to last a lifetime.

We’ll work with you to help determine the amount of money you’ll need to maintain your lifestyle and provide options that can ensure continued financial security and peace of mind.
